Paul Mescal to join Ryan Tubridy on this week's Late Late Show

Paul Mescal is set to join Ryan Tubridy for his first in-person appearance on The Late Late Show on Friday.

The Maynooth star narrowly missed out on a BAFTA award on Sunday night for his role in the coming-of-age film Aftersun, with Austin Butler winning the top award for his role in the Elvis biopic. Mescal previously won a BAFTA in 2021 for his break-out role in Sally Rooney's tv adaptation of Normal People opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Speaking on his RTE Radio One show this morning, Ryan Tubridy revealed that he will be joined by the actor in studio on Friday. Mescal previously appeared on The Late Late Show over Zoom during the pandemic alongside his Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Tubridy jokingly said that he will look Paul Mescal in the eye and tell him: "Stop being so good at everything - it makes all of us feel very inadequate!" He also commended the Maynooth actor his “cúpla focal” on the BAFTA’s red carpet last night while speaking to TG4.

The 27-year-old actor conducted the interview as Gaeilge, relying on his Cert Irish to get him through the interview At the BAFTAS, Paul was joined by his proud parents Dearbhla and Paul.

Fans flocked to social media to praise the Kildare actor for speaking his home country's native language. One person commented: "When you have limited Irish, or it's been a long time since you last used it, speaking can be intimidating."

A second added: "Brilliant. Not many around without limits to their gaeilge. Very brave and authentic."

The 27-year-old actor will next travel to the Academy Awards in Hollywood in March, having secured a best actor nomination for his performance in Aftersun.
