Paul Hollywood's message to Great British Bake Off's Lizzie Acker

Scouse contestant, Lizzie Acker, departed from Channel 4's Great British Bake Off, saying that she was proud to use her final showstopper creation to celebrate her special educational needs.

Judge Paul Hollywood said he was sorry to see her leave.

He said: "It’s really sad to see Lizzie go as she is from my neck of the woods.

"She has been up and down over the weeks, but this week she has done really well. The problem was she came up with an ace, but then everybody else did.”

Lizzie has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorter (ADHD) and also suffers from severe dyslexia.

The 28-year-old competed in eight weeks of the show but sadly her journey came to an end in Free-From week.

Speaking of leaving the show, she said: "I feel really proud of myself, I’m really happy I’m a quarter finalist. I was so pleased to get to where I did, and the bakers that made it to the semi-final truly deserve to be there. These are happy tears.

“For my showstopper I wanted to celebrate SEN [special educational needs] - it’s all about being different. I get a lot of brain fuzz and I wanted to show that in my showstopper.

“That last showstopper was a gluten-free coconut sponge with pineapple jam, and a lime swiss meringue buttercream. I felt that was the best cake I have ever made in my life, and I walked out of that tent with my head held high.

“I have had such lovely messages on social media about SEN, and they have all been so positive with people relating to me. If it makes them feel good about it and they can identify with someone on television talking about it normally, then I think that is a good thing.”

Lizzie, who works in the local Jaguar car factory, said that the show has changed her life and she has made friends for life in the other contestants.

She said: "It has changed my life, as I now have 11 people that I can talk to about cake.

"We visit each other all the time, and Freya and I did a road trip. We went to Scarborough to her home town, and then Leicester to see Chigs, Birmingham for Rochica and then down to London to Amanda who hosted a barbecue for everyone and we stayed with Crystelle.

"Then we went to Kent to see Tom, and Brighton to see Jurgen, and then over to Bournemouth to see Maggie. We were driving for about nine days, it was a fantastic trip, and we felt like Thelma and Louise.”

Star Baker this week was Chigs, with his gluten free red velvet celebration cake. He has won the award for the second time.

Next week remaining bakers Jurgen, Giuseppe, Crystelle and Chigs compete in the semi-final, which will be patisserie week.

Great British Bake Off airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4
