Paul Hollywood forced to apologise for 'insensitive' diabetes joke on Bake Off

Paul Hollywood has taken to social media to apologise for an 'insensitive' joke about diabetes he made on The Great British Bake Off.

Fans of the Channel 4 show were furious at the comment the 53-year-old Bake Off judge made when speaking about one contestant's Chelsea Buns.

The TV chef upset viewers by suggesting the cakes were like "diabetes on a plate".

The comment caused consternation on social media, with many calling out Hollywood for being 'uneducated' about diabetes.

One irate fan posted on social media: "Anyone else shocked at Paul Hollywood’s 'diabetes on a plate' comment when discussing a dessert on tonight’s episode of GBBO?

"I feel like this kind of stuff just reinforces uneducated and frankly stupid ideas and questions about diabetes, for example, 'did you get it cos you eat too much cake?' and my personal favourite, 'if you ate this Mars bar, would you die?'"

Another raged on Twitter : "It is very irresponsible and untrue to say it of anyone, whatever their type of diabetes."

This brought some respite for Hollywood, who had some positive response to his apology, with one fan writing: "You meant no harm and that is all that matters and you apologised."

The Bake Off finalists were confirmed as Steph Blackwell, David Atherton and Alice Fevronia after Rosie Brandreth-Poynter was sent home.

*The Great British Bake Off final airs Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
