Paul Heckingbottom - Kilmarnock are in the driving seat for Europe but Hibs can catch them

Paul Heckingbottom admits Kilmarnock are in a strong position to claim the last potential European spot, but Hibs can still overhaul them.

Hearts' late equaliser Sunday's 1-1 Edinburgh derby draw threw a spanner in the works, and leaves Hibs needing Killie to drop points as well as beat them at Rugby Park in the penultimate game of the campaign.

That's far from impossible though as long as Heckingbottom's men hold up their end of the bargain.

That being said, seeing out the game against their rivals would have simplified matters enormously.

“It would have because it would have been in our hands,” he said. “That’s why the boys were disappointed.

“It was a big game for the players, the fans and everything, but there were other things at stake.

“It would have been lovely to have been just two behind Kilmarnock but and it’s sort of in your hands then.

“We’ve got to match their results and beat them when we play them but they’re still in the driving seat.”

Hibs head to Ibrox this weekend having not lost to Steven Gerrard’s side this season, coming away with a draw in every meeting of the two.

It will be Heckingbottom’s first visit to the stadium, and is looking forward to a new scenario.

“it’s a different challenge, isn’t it?” he posed. “We’ll set up to try and win it, work on it all week and the players will be ready.

“It’ll be a tough, tough game. We know that. They’ll throw lots of different problems at us and we’ll have to try and hurt them in a different way as well.”

Daryl Horgan says Hibs are disappointed with their reaction to Hearts' derby fight back

He also insists Hibs' good recent record in Govan will be of no advantage to them. He added: “History is history. Yeah it’s nice to look back in certain things but it’s not going to help us in this game.

“We want to keep this season alive as long as we can and we’re looking even long term and working on things for next year.

“It’s at that stage of the season. We want to be in the hunt right to the very end and it mat still not be enough.”
