Paul Gascoigne breaks down on Good Morning Britain as he talks about return to White Hart Lane

Paul Gascoigne broke down this morning as he recalled his recent return to his old club for a legends match.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the former footy ace’s voice cracked as he explained how it felt to step onto Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium at White Hart Lane in March.

He was one of the squad picked for the Spurs legends team, which played against an Inter Milan side led by former boss Jose Mourinho.

Speaking to hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, Gazza said: “It was really good.

“I cried after it.”

Gazza, who has struggled with alcohol addiction for many years, was visibly touched that so many fans were still supportive of him.

He continued: “I trained hard for about three months for that then obviously my achilles… but the ovation I got was unbelievable.

“For the time I spent there and the fans - I didn’t expect that. Some of the fans now probably weren’t born when I was playing.”

The 51-year-old was on the breakfast show alongside former rival Vinnie Jones to talk about going on tour to discuss the highs and lows of their friendship and career.

Former heavy drinker Vinnie, who has been teetotal for six years, spoke of how hard it is for professional footballers to keep themselves away from temptations such as alcohol.

“It’s hard as you retire as Gazza knows. You’re training with everybody, with the lads every day, you’re having the banterous, great fun, and then all of a sudden one day it stops.

“I was lucky enough to go onto something else but when you try and stay in the game, you know, alcohol is a disease and Gazza fights very well with that now, just like he did when he played.”

The pair also spoke about THAT infamous moment 31 years ago when former Wimbledon United star Vinnie grabbed Gazza’s, ahem, private parts when he was playing for Newcastle.

Gazza said: “It really hurt. I nearly lost my family allowance.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
