Patti Smith is to turn her award-winning memoir Just Kids into a TV series. The book, which describes her relationship with the artist and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, was released in 2010. It’s believed Smith started writing a screenplay adaptation for it the following year.
In a statement, Smith said the show, which will appear on US channel Showtime as a miniseries, would “allow us to explore the characters more deeply, enabling us to develop stories beyond the book and allow a measure of unorthodox presentation”.
She added: “The medium of a television limited series offers narrative freedom and a chance to expand upon the themes of the book.”
The show will be co-written by Smith, and co-produced with John Logan who created Penny Dreadful for Showtime. The musician recently announced a sequel to Just Kids called M Train. It is due to be released on 6 October.
Smith is currently touring her classic debut album Horses across Europe. The show has received rave reviews so far, especially her performance at this year’s Glastonbury festival.
