Patrick Vieira has already told Arsenal why they shouldn't complete Renato Sanches transfer

Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira has already told Arsenal why they should avoid signing Lille midfielder Renato Sanches.

French outlet Le10Sport reported on Tuesday that the Gunners are 'very interested' in the Portuguese international, who has less than two years left on his contract with the Ligue 1 side.

The report claims that both Arsenal and AC Milan are keen on signing Sanches in the January transfer window, with the Italian giants further along in their pursuit.

However, Crystal Palace manager Vieira has previously warned any potential suitor that the 24-year-old, while talented, does struggle for consistency, something that Mikel Arteta's side have successfully avoided in recent months, avoiding defeat in each of their last ten outings.

Speaking to ITV over the summer, the Frenchman said: “He was a big prospect. Last year with Lille, he did really well.

“He wasn’t really consistent during the season but he had some flashes of his talent.”

Sanches started just 14 games in Ligue 1 last season as Lille beat Mauricio Pochettino's Paris-Saint Germain to a historic league title.

This season the former Bayern Munich playmaker has started four league games, making a further two substitute appearances, often suffering from a plethora of injury problems.

In fact, the 24-year-old has missed a whopping 39 games through injury since joining the French outfit in the summer of 2019.

Speaking to La Voix du Nord in the summer, Lille president Olivier Letang admitted that Sanches' knee injury cost him a move away from Stade Pierre Mauroy.

“It’s no secret that Renato [Sanches] could have gone, he was allowed to leave. We had almost reached an agreement with a very big club, but obviously his knee injury changed the plan.

"Now, we’re happy to have Renato still with us and we hope that he comes back as soon as possible.”
