Patrick Bedford's charges dropped after fatal central Australian tour bus crash

Charges have been dropped over a fatal tour bus crash earlier this year.

Patrick Bedford, who owns and operates the Emu Run Experience tour company and was the former chairman of Tourism Central Australia, was charged in August with two counts of negligently causing harm.

Mr Bedford fronted Alice Springs Local Court today, where the police prosecutor asked to withdraw the charges.

"The DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) has determined there is insufficient evidence to proceed with these charges at the current time," he said.

Prosecutors told the court that police and NT Worksafe would continue their investigation.

The Director of Public Prosecutions said the matter would be revisited in the future, and a determination would be made about whether or not prosecution for either work safety or criminal breach was warranted.

Mr Bedford was charged two months after the bus crash on Larapinta Drive, about five kilometres east of Hermannsburg, on June 6.

Police said the bus, which was carrying 19 people from interstate, rolled multiple times.

Mr Bedford was not driving the bus at the time.

One passenger – a 69-year-old man – died at the scene, and multiple others were seriously injured and taken to Alice Springs Hospital for treatment.

The other passengers and the driver received cuts and bruising.

Mr Bedford stepped down as Tourism Central Australia chair after he was charged, but remains a member of the board.

He ran for Alice Springs Town Council mayor at last year's elections.
