Patrice Evra says he received offer to become Man Utd sporting director

Patrice Evra has revealed he was offered the role of Manchester United sporting director.

The Frenchman, who has been particularly outspoken about the current environment at Old Trafford, played for the Red Devils during a trophy-laden era.

Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2006, the left-back spent eight years on the red half of Manchester.

He left after the Scot's retirement and has since watched the club fall from grace as they currently endure a trophy drought that dates back five years.

Off pitch appointments and motives have been cited as an issue with United thriving commercially despite decline on the pitch.

Darren Fletcher was recently bought in as technical director but Evra revealed he too was offered a position with his former club, although he did not disclose exactly when the offer was made.

“I passed my coaching diplomas and received lots of offers, including becoming a United sporting director,” the Frenchman told L’Equipe.

Evra is one of a number of former United stars who have spoken out about the club's current predicament.

Rio Ferdinand too has been vocal in his criticism of matters at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old claimed back in 2019 that talks were being held as he aimed to restore the club to the success of yesteryear.

Evra said: “I am having some important talks behind the scenes so we will decide whether I work for the club in a certain role. The problem is I want to do everything, but in life you can’t do everything.

“But yeah, a role where I can get my hands dirty. If I come back to the club, it's not just to put my face on it, it's because I want my club to go back to the best club in the world.

"As a player I sacrificed my life to succeed at this club, so I don’t know which role I will have but I will do the same."

United currently sit seventh despite investing in the likes Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho in the summer.

Poor results cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job with Ralf Rangnick being hired on an interim basis.

Evra has voiced concerns over the German's presence in the dugout, questioning how he aligns with United's traditions.

“That’s where I don’t agree,” Evra said. “United have a DNA, a way to play. So now, we’re going to be based on Rangnick’s style of play?

“Where is the history of my club? Is this man going to come and say ‘now we’re going to play like that?’

“Manchester United played for so many years in a way and now this guy is in charge of United’s style of play.

“I’m just starting to be really frustrated. Who is Rangnick? Has he been a manager? Did he win a major trophy?"
