Patients at Nottingham City Hospital making most of new scrambled egg machine

Patients at Nottingham City Hospital have been making the most of a scrambled egg-making machine on a ward - introduced as part of a trial thought to be the first of its kind in the health care sector.

Located on the Bramley and Carrel Ward, the Scraegg machine gives patients a hot breakfast option.

The machine is free on loan to the hospital as part of the trial that started on January 6.

The hot breakfast option was requested through feedback left from what is known as the Memory Menu Concept.

Chris Neale, assistant head of facilities at NUH said: "As part of NUH Memory Menu Concept we communicated with the public of Nottingham to ask them what they would like to see on their patient feeding menu, we had a lot of requests for hot breakfasts and more choice.

"This has always proved difficult in the past as we don’t have the infrastructure in place to be able to deliver a hot breakfast to patients safely or to the quality that is acceptable.

"At a recent catering event I saw the Scraegg machine being presented and thought it could be the solution to a hot breakfast offer and arranged for the machine to be delivered to NUH to pilot on one of our wards to see the benefits it would have for our patients.

“The machine is portable and is taken around the ward during breakfast service and produces fresh scrambled eggs in 15 seconds which is served immediately to the patient.

"We are currently on week two of the trial and the patient feedback is positive especially for patients who have been with us for long periods of time and welcome the additional hot choice.”
