Patient, 29, dies with coronavirus as South West hospital deaths rise

Daily hospital deaths across the South West have risen today as 95 fatalities have been recorded across the region.

A further 973 deaths in English hospitals have been confirmed today (January 27) - including a 29-year-old.

Today's grim total brings the overall number of people who died after testing positive for the Covid-19 in hospitals to 68,894.

The North East and Yorkshire reported the lowest deaths, with 82. The South West confirmed 95, while the Midland recorded the highest, with 209.

Patients were aged between 29 and 103 years old. All except 50 (aged 32 to 98 years old) had known underlying health conditions.

Date of death ranges from 18 November to 26 January 2021, with the majority being on or after 21 January.

The number of deaths of patients with Covid-19 by region are as follows:

  • East of England - 140
  • London - 167
  • Midlands - 209
  • North East & Yorkshire - 82
  • North West - 138
  • South East – 142
  • South West - 95

Bristol confirmed its joint-highest daily deaths yesterday, when ten were reported.

And every area in Gloucestershire and Somerset reported deaths yesterday.

Speaking at a Downing Street press conference yesterday, England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty warned "we’re going to see quite a lot more deaths over the next few weeks before the effects of the vaccines begin to be felt.”
