'Patchwork' Nottinghamshire road voted worst for potholes in the county

Drivers have to swerve to avoid potholes on a 'patchwork' Nottinghamshire road that has been voted the worst for potholes in the county. Westdale Lane, which runs from Mapperley to Gedling, was voted Nottinghamshire's most pothole-ridden road by Nottinghamshire Live readers in a recent poll.

The busy road has previously been targeted for repair works, but sections are still in a poor condition. Residents have now criticised the state of the road, with it being labelled dangerous by those who drive down it frequently.

Retiree David Wood, 74, who has lived in Westdale Lane for 40 years, was appalled by the condition of the road, which he claimed had recently damaged his wife's car. "I've just put in a claim for £305 because my wife's car's front spring broke from a pothole - it is really dreadful.

"We've already signed a petition to resurface the road, which is like a patchwork. The quality of this road is not even piecemeal, it is pot luck."

Rob Willott, 48, and Lisa Willott, 43, who live in Glendale Close, off Westdale Lane, agreed the road surface was poor, as they had to consciously avoid the potholes every day. "In terms of if it's worse on either side, I think it is a bit rubbish all along the road. It is dangerous really, it is something you have to think about all the time when driving here," Mr Willott said.

Mrs Willott added: "Sometimes you have to go on the other side of the road to avoid them all. It has been worse since we had the bad frost recently."

Nottinghamshire County Council said works had taken place over recent years to resurface from Plains Road to Oakleigh Avenue. It added there were plans to resurface another section of Westdale Lane this year.

Wes Howes, 44, who works for EMAS and lives in Mapperley, added: "It is quite bad really - the road condition on parts of this road isn't good. It probably needs to be resurfaced as it is really patchy and some of the potholes can be fairly deep."

Nottinghamshire County Council said it was aware parts of the road had "deteriorated", with the authority considering future improvements. A County Council highways manager said in a statement: “We’re pleased to let residents know that there were already plans to resurface a section of Westdale Lane in Gedling this year, between Oakleigh Avenue and Cavendish Road. This is in addition to the works that have taken place over recent years to resurface from Plains Road to Oakleigh Avenue.

“We are aware of other areas of Westdale Lane where the road surface has deteriorated and we’re considering where we can make improvements in future programmes. Until the works take place, we urge residents and road users to help us keep Westdale Lane and Nottinghamshire’s roads safe by reporting any potholes through the MyNotts app or online at nottscc.gov.uk.”
