Passengers feel 'unsafe' at Bramley station due to rising crime, claims MP

Passengers feel unsafe at Bramley station due to a recent increase in crime.

That's the message from Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves, who is calling on Northern Rail to improve lighting and CCTV at the train station.

West Yorkshire Police were called to the station 15 times between August 2018 and February 2019, to deal with reports of various offences, including theft, arson, criminal damage and sexual assault.

Ms Reeves outlined her concerns in a letter to transport secretary Chris Grayling and said the station is 'in need of urgent reinvestment' from the government.

She wrote: "With increased reports of criminal activity at the station leaving many rail users feeling unsafe, it was agreed (at a recent meeting) that CCTV cameras and better lighting were required as a matter of urgency."

She added: "Although I am pleased that Northern are willing to make improvements to the lighting, no timescale has been given for this work and there is no commitment that CCTV will be provided.

"There are also wider concerns regarding the availability of trains at Bramley station. Even at peak commuting times, trains often have only two carriages, which is not sufficient to meet the demand.

"Many commuters have told me that they have been unable to board a train on numerous occasions due to overcrowding."

The government has been berated for under investing in the rail network in the north of England, but says it is planning to invest up to £70 billion in improving northern roads railways over the next 30 years.
