Part of major North Ayrshire route 'closed' amid reports of crash

Part of the A78 is said to be closed following reports of a crash (Image: Street View)

PART of one of North Ayrshire's busiest routes has been closed following a crash, according to Traffic Scotland.

The government trunk road service is reporting that the A78 has been shut southbound, from Stevenston towards Irvine, between the Pennyburn Roundabout and Eglinton Interchange.

It is stated that this is due to a collision which was reported shortly before 4pm today (Friday, May 22).

As a result, heavy congestion is also being shown on the A78 between the Sharphill and Pennyburn roundabouts, as well as the A738 in Kilwinning.

Further details of the incident are not known at this stage.

Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service have been approached for comment.
