Paris Olympics: First triathlon training cancelled over Seine pollution

The inaugural practice for athletes competing in the triathlon at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games was cancelled on Sunday. Organizers made the decision to call off the session due to concerns about water quality in the River Seine, which has possibly been affected by recent rain.

After a meeting "on the water quality" and tests, "a joint decision was taken to cancel the swimming part of the triathlon orientation," AFP quoted from a Paris 2024 and World Triathlon statement.

PARIS OLYMPICS LIVE UPDATES: DAY 2

After conducting tests in mid-July, authorities announced that the River Seine had reached a level of cleanliness suitable for swimming. However, uncertainties lingered regarding whether the water quality would be adequate for competitive events.

"Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that the priority is the health of the athletes. The analysis carried out yesterday in the Seine showed water quality levels that... do not present sufficient guarantees to allow the event to take place," the statement said.

The organizers of the triathlon competition, set to commence on July 30, have attributed the current water quality issues to the recent rainfall. They expressed their assurance that the water conditions would sufficiently improve before the event's scheduled start date.

Heavy rainfall can lead to untreated sewage being carried into the river, compromising the water quality.

In case the water quality fails to meet the required standards, the organizers have prepared a contingency 'Plan B'. It involves either delaying the events by a few days or relocating the marathon swimming competition to Vaires-sur-Marne, situated along the Marne river, east of Paris.

On July 17, Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, and Tony Estanguet, the chief organizer of Paris 2024, participated in a swim in the Seine to demonstrate their confidence in the water quality.
