Panthers place rookie QB Matt Corral on season-ending IR

As Baker Mayfield got closer to winning the starting job for the Carolina Panthers, the rookie season of Matt Corral felt more and more like it was turning into a redshirt one. Well, it officially did today—but for a much different reason.

On Tuesday afternoon, the team announced that Corral has been placed on the season-ending injured reserve. The move will keep the 23-year-old on the sidelines for the entirety of the 2022 campaign.

What got Corral here was a Lisfranc injury to his left foot, a very unfortunate development from his preseason outing on Friday night against the New England Patriots. With that performance included, he finished up his pair of exhibition appearances having completed 10 of his 24 attempts for 69 yards.

Corral was drafted by the Panthers in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft. Carolina traded up into the No. 94 overall spot with the Patriots to secure the University of Mississippi standout.

His placement now counts towards the team’s cutdown to the 80-man roster limit for the week. Joining him is cornerback Duke Dawson, who was also placed on the injured reserve, and tight end Jared Scott, was who waived.

Teams now have until Aug. 30 to reach their 53-man regular season rosters.
