On Monday, the Panthers claimed running back Mike Davis, who was waived by the Bears on Saturday to increase their chances of receiving a compensatory draft pick in 2020.
The Bears signed Davis to a two-year, $6 million deal in March. But Davis was never able to fit into a three-man rotation, in part because rookie David Montgomery “has kinda taken off with what we’ve given him,” running backs coach Charles London said Monday.
Davis played only 12 percent of the Bears’ offensive snaps.
“He wants an opportunity to play a little bit more, and that opportunity probably wasn’t going to be here for him,” London said.
That might not happen on the Panthers. He’ll be one of the backups behind Christian McCaffrey, whose 989 rushing yards rank second in the NFL.
