Thailand's Davis Cup team took a 2-0 lead against the Philippines in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group 2 tie yesterday.
Palaphoom Kovapitukted and Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul gave Thailand a great start after they won their opening singles matches at the National Tennis Development Centre, Muang Thong Thani.
Palaphoom claimed the first point for the home team with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Jeson Patrombon. Wishaya then doubled Thailand's lead with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) win over Alberto Lim.
"I am pleased with my form and the fact that I won a point for the team," said Thailand's No.1 Wishaya. "My next match is against the Philippines' No.1 Jeson Patrombon. I know his style of play and I'm confident I can win."
Meanwhile, Thailand captain Danai Udomchoke is counting on the experience of twins Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana to win the third and decisive point for Thailand in the doubles today.
"I am pleased with the first day's results. We had hoped to win the first two points and we managed to do that today. Tomorrow, I hope the twins [Sonchat and Sanchai] can win the third point and settle the tie. But we must not underestimate our opponents," said Danai.
Today's matches start at 10am, with the doubles tie between Sonchat and Sanchai and Jurence Zosimo Mendoza and Francis Casey Alcantara. Wishaya and Patrombon will play the third singles rubber, followed by a match-up between Palaphoom and Lim.
