JAIPUR: Sriganganagar police, investigating the case of Rizwan (24), who crossed the international border into India illegally in Sriganganagar, has found that the accused is also facing trial in his home country for vandalising Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s statue at Lahore’s Shahi Quila in August 2019.
Rizwan had told a joint interrogation committee comprising BSF, police, IB and Army personnel soon after his arrest on July 16 that he had come to India to kill suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
Officers interrogating him claimed the man appeared to have an “anti-Hindu psyche” and seemed self-radicalised as he claimed that whatever he has done so far was to save Islam.
On Thursday, interrogators came to know that Rizwan had vandalised a statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Lahore. “He was arrested and is facing trial in Pakistan. He has not revealed how he was planning to reach closer to Sharma to kill her,” Sriganganagar SP Anand Sharma said. “Currently he is on bail in the Pakistan case,” he said.
The accused is to be produced in court on Saturday. Police are planning to seek extension of custody so that Rizwan can be jointly interrogated by various agencies.
