Paisley Subway shop destroyed in second town centre blaze within 24 hours

A Paisley Subway shop has been left destroyed after a fire ripped through the building on Friday night.

Emergency services raced to the fast-food sandwich outlet in Causeyside Street around 8.40pm following multiple reports that the building was up in flames.

Four fire crews battled to put out the blaze for hours until it was extinguished shortly before 1am. No injuries were reported as the premises was closed at the time.

Images seen by the Paisley Daily Express show the building gutted by the fire, with the walls thick with black smoke and much of the fixtures and furniture completely burned.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue (SFRS) spokesperson said: “We were called out at 8.40pm to a Subway shop on Causeyside Street Paisley on fire. There were a total of four fire appliances in attendance and they were there until around 1.30am on Saturday.

“There were no casualties reported.”

This is the second fast-food outlet in the town to burn down in 24 hours – with Aladdins Tandoori takeaway just minutes away in Johnston Street going up in flames on Thursday evening.

Three people were injured in the late-night fire with residents in tenement flats evacuated thanks to the quick actions of an on-duty police officer who spotted the flames.

Police sealed off the road while firefighters tackled the inferno. Pictures from the scene showed flames billowing out of the building, leaving the takeaway shop gutted.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Around 8.40pm on Friday, June 2, police received a report of a fire on Causeyside Street, Paisley.

“There were no reports of any injuries and the fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. The fire is not thought to be wilful.”
