Paisley firefighters crowned best in UK as ladder climb challenge tops Ben Nevis

Paisley firefighters have yet again proved that they are the best in the UK after completing a challenge that saw them ascend ladders to almost double the height of Ben Nevis.

The crew were competing in The Fire Fighters Charity annual December Ascender, which sees teams at stations try their hand at climbing as high as possible to raise funds.

The Paisley crew climbed an incredible 2,470m, climbing the ladders a whopping 203 times in one hour at their Canal Street headquarters, making them the winners of the December Ascender for the third year running.

The challenge ran until Tuesday, January 31, with the Paisley crew completing their winning effort on Friday, January 27.

As part of the challenge, teams of up to 10 people climbed a 13.5m ladder as many times as possible in one hour.

Paisley took part in the challenge for the third year in a row.

The Fire Fighters Charity supports serving and retired fire and rescue service personnel, their dependants and other eligible members of the UK fire services community, throughout their lives, helping them to live happier and healthier.

Derek Gotts, managing director of Supply Plus Ltd, which is the main sponsor of the challenge, said: “We are delighted to continue to sponsor the ascender challenge to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity.

“The event is about teamwork, fitness, training and fun using a rescue ladder product which we, as a business, are proud the Fire and Rescue Service choose to utilise.

“The Fire Fighters Charity is a great cause doing fantastic work to support firefighters and their families in times of need.

“We congratulate the Paisley crew for their three in a row wins and begin to wonder who can beat them!”

Lyndsay Campbell, community fundraiser for The Fire Fighters Charity, added: “We are incredibly grateful to the crew for taking on such a fantastic challenge to raise vital funds for us.

“Every pound will make such a difference to the people that we support.”
