Paddy McNair to Luton Town would be 'shrewd move' by newly-promoted Premier League side

Former Leeds United defender Carlton Palmer believes Paddy McNair would be a "shrewd signing" for newly-promoted Luton Town.

The Hatters are eyeing up a move for the Northern Ireland international as they prepare for life in the Premier League.

McNair initially struggled for game time at Middlesbrough last season, but became a regular in Michael Carrick's side following Dael Fry's injury.

The 28-year-old went on to score one goal in 34 appearances in all competitions, while his versatility in playing in defence or midfield is another attraction to Luton.

McNair has also experienced playing in the top flight during his time at Manchester United and Sunderland.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Palmer believes McNair moving to Luton would be smart business for both clubs.

He said: "Luton Town are running the rule over Middlesbrough centre-back Paddy McNair.

"Paddy has been capped 61 times by Northern Ireland, he's entering the last year of his contract.

"Middlesbrough, after failing to win promotion, will have to sell to spend this summer so Michael Carrick can replenish his squad and bring in new blood.

"So whilst Carrick will not want to sell McNair, they have good options in central defence.

"Luton are aware that McNair has had Premier League experience previously at Manchester United and Sunderland earlier in his career and at the right price, he could be a shrewd acquisition."
