Packers rookie Darnell Savage says he’s run 4.29 in the 40

Here’s an interesting little tidbit about Green Bay Packers rookie safety Darnell Savage: The 21st overall pick has run the 40-yard dash faster than the blazing 4.36-second time he posted at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

“The fastest I’ve ever ran is actually a 4.29,” Savage told Larry McCarren of Packers.com.

Even at 4.36, Savage had the third-fastest time among defensive backs and the eighth fastest time overall at the combine. Had he finished in 4.29 seconds, he would have tied for first among all players.

Either way, Savage is verifiably fast.

He’s so fast he makes fast people look not fast. Slow down, Darnell, this is a neighborhood!

But the Packers’ first-round pick isn’t only a straight-line speed demon; he runs fast but he also plays fast, too.

“Of course it’s great to be fast,” Savage said. “I allow my body and my mind and my eyes to take me to the plays. I just let my speed do the rest. I feel like I’d be the same player if I ran 4.3, 4.4, I don’t think it matters, just the way I play the game and my mindset is what makes me a good player.”
