Packers release 3 players from injured reserve with injury settlements

The Green Bay Packers reached injury settlements with safety Tarvarius Moore, running back Tyler Goodson and long snapper Broughton Hatcher, releasing all three from injured reserve.

Moore (knee) was placed on injured reserve during final cutdowns. Goodson (shoulder) and Hatcher (unknown) were waived/injured. When Goodson and Hatcher went unclaimed, both reverted to injured reserve.

For players without season-ending injuries, the use of injury settlements pay for the period of time expected to be missed by the player. Once the settlement expires, the player becomes a free agent and is free to sign with any team.

An injury settlement also keeps the door open for a return to Green Bay. An additional three weeks would be required after the expiration of the injury settlement for Moore, Goodson or Hatcher to return to the Packers.

An example: Let’s say the Packers and Moore agreed to a one-week injury settlement, believing Moore would have otherwise missed Week 1 with his knee injury. In this scenario, Moore would be eligible to re-sign with the Packers after Week 4 (one week settlement plus three additional weeks).

Injury settlements provide financial benefit for the player and an opportunity to play again that season. The benefit for teams is not having to pay a player on injured reserve all season.

The Packers already released offensive lineman Jake Hanson from injured reserve with an injury settlement. Rookie running back Lew Nichols, who was also waived/injured, is another candidate for an injury settlement, although the Packers have him under contract for the next four seasons and may decide to keep him on injured reserve for the entire 2023 season.

Tight end Tyler Davis is out for the season and will remain on injured reserve. Offensive tackle Luke Tenuta made the 53-man roster but was soon after placed on injured reserve, giving him an opportunity to return to the roster after four games or once healthy.
