Owner warns dog was left with liver damage after ingesting something 'toxic' in Inverleith Park

Owners who walk their dog in the Inverleith Park area in Edinburgh have been warned to beware after a dog became seriously ill.

In a post to Facebook page Dachshunds in Edinburgh earlier this month, owner Rob Hussey said his dachshund Alfie had "ingested something" that left him with liver damage.

The dog was taken to the vet with vomiting and diarrhea, Rob added that the vet said a toxin was the only possible cause of the animal's illness.

He said: "Owners beware - in the Inverleith/park area. Our Black and Tan (Alfie) has ingested something yesterday whilst out which has caused him liver damage. (Vet has informed us that a toxin is the only possible cause.)

"He was vomiting/back end too, since 4am this morning, went downhill rapidly from noon.

"He is currently overnighting in the vets on a drip with antibiotics. Positive thoughts with our wee boy for speedy recovery."

Well wishes poured in for Alfie, with one owner commenting that they walk their dog in the area.

Susan Godfrey said: "Oh no that’s awful. We live in Trinity and walk this area with our Ruby. Thanks for the heads up. Get well soon Alfie."

Elsewhere another person suggested that it may have been "chewing gum" that made the dog sick.

However Rob said it is unclear, commenting that it was thought to be "something off the ground" but that the dog walker "didn’t see anything obvious".

Later updating the post, Rob shared a sweet photo of Alfie after making a recovery, writing that "normal service has been resumed".
