Owen Farrell to learn fate next week as date set for disciplinary hearing

Owen Farrell will learn his fate on Tuesday evening after a date was set for his disciplinary hearing.

The England captain was sent off for a shocking tackle during Saracens' 28-18 defeat to Wasps yesterday - having caught Wasps' Charlie Atkinson with a swinging arm to the head in the 61st minute of the match.

The tackle - which resulted in a straight red card - has provoked a strong reaction from pundits and fans alike, with many calling for a lengthy ban.

And now it has been confirmed when Farrell will discover his fate.

"Owen Farrell is to appear before an online independent disciplinary panel on the evening of Tuesday 8th September," read a statement on the Saracens website.

"Farrell was shown a red card by referee Christophe Ridley in the 61st minute of the match between Saracens and Wasps on Saturday 5th September 2020. This was for a dangerous tackle on Wasps’ Charlie Atkinson, contrary to World Rugby Law 9.13.

"The independent panel will comprise Mike Hamlin (chair) with Gareth Graham and Leon Lloyd."

A lengthy ban could see Farrell miss the end of the Gallagher Premiership season, although Saracens' fate is already confirmed having been relegated after breaching salary cap regulations.

England coach Eddie Jones will also be left waiting on Tuesday's hearing, as a hefty ban could affect Farrell's involvement in England's matches later this year.
