‘Overwhelmed’ Richard E Grant has the best reaction to his Oscar nomination

Richard E Grant has shared a sweet video of himself revisiting the old “bedsit” he used to live in, after landing his first ever Oscar nomination.

The 61-year-old actor revealed he was feeling “overwhelmed” after finding out he is up for the Supporting Actor gong for his role as Jack Hock in Can You Ever Forgive Me?

To mark the occasion, Grant paid a visit to the £30-a-week single room he used to live in 36 years ago.

In a sweet video on Instagram, he said: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed. 36 years ago I rented this bedsit here, which was one room in Notting Hill Gate for £30 a week, so $50. I cannot believe that 36 years later that I am standing here as a 62-year-old man having an Oscar nomination!”

Emotional: Grant and McCarthy both cried over their nominations (Getty Images for BFI)

He captioned the video: “Am levitating at this astonishing news. Thank you to @TheAcademy for this nomination in such incredible company. I’m indebted to so many people but most of all @melissamccarthy & @mariellestilesheller @canyoueverforgiveme.”

Grant also revealed that he celebrated the moment by crying alongside co-star Melissa McCarthy.

He told Entertainment Weekly: “I’m just absolutely astonished. I just spoke to Melissa and we were both crying, so I feel very emotional right now. It’s so beyond anything I could have ever imagined.”

The star added that it was such an emotional moment because it is about “two people who are failures in life and very lonely.”

He said: “The fact that’s its touched people and moved them is absolutely amazing. We’re gobsmacked.”

Grant will face off against Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman), Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Sam Elliott (A Star is Born) and Sam Rockwell (Vice), for the gong.

The 91st Academy Awards will take place at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on Sunday, February 24
