Overwatch 2: Release date and how to apply for beta test

The highly anticipated sequel to Overwatch has announced a beta testing event will soon be taking place.

Overwatch 2 will contain similar gameplay styles to the first game, complete with highly-competitive matches where players can choose different champions to play as depending on their playstyle. However, while many aspects of the game should feel familiar to seasoned Overwatch players, from what we have seen so far the new 5v5 format will have its fair share of additions to hopefully make matches feel fresh.

According to the Overwatch website: "This change in team composition will allow every player to have more individual impact than ever before and will transform tank heroes into aggressive bruisers who pack raw, game-changing power in each of their kits."

If you can't wait to get your hands on Overwatch 2, here's everything that you need to know about the game so far and the new beta event.

Overwatch 2 release date

No official release date for Overwatch 2 has yet been announced (Blizzard)

Overwatch 2 will launch on a wide range of platforms including PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, no specific release date has yet been announced.

This may not be bad news though since the game's director Jeff Kaplan has noted that his team is more concerned with producing a product of high quality, indicating that they don't want to rush out the game's release.

Overwatch 2 beta event

The Overwatch 2 event will only be available for PC players at this time which means Xbox and Playstation players will be unable to take part this time around. The official closed Beta will be taking place now until Tuesday, May 17.

For a chance to take part, players must register their interest with the Overwatch team by heading over to the Overwatch 2 page where they can register their email. Following this, the Overwatch team will send a welcome email to players who have been selected to take part in the beta.

Note that registering your email will not guarantee a place in the beta and it appears to be up to the team's discretion. Another way to gain access is to participate in the Overwatch 2 PvP Beta Twich Drops campaign.

This is where Twitch viewers must tune into different streamers broadcasting Overwatch 2 where they will be eligible for drops after four hours of viewing. It's also important to note that players must own the first Overwatch game to be invited into the PvP beta.
