Overcompensating: what we know about Amazon's college show with Charli XCX and Megan Fox

Fans are excited about the upcoming comedy series Overcompensating, which looks set to feature all the thrills and spills of college as well as an insight into being a closeted gay man.

The trailer for the new shop dropped on Tuesday and is soundtracked by 2012 song I Love It by Icona Pop and British singer Charli XCX, who appears as herself in the trailer. She also has a role behind the scenes.

Here’s what we know about the show so far.

It’s coming out very soon

Overcompensating will premiere on Friday, May 15 with all eight episodes up in one go on Prime Video.

The original series is produced by Amazon MGM (following the massive takeover deal) and indie studio A24.

Benito Skinner plays himself (more or less)

Get to know Benito Skinner if you don’t already. The 31-year-old influencer, known online as Benny Drama, is harking back to his own college days in this series which he has created and also stars in.

He plays Benny, a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen (Wally Baram), a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs.

Skinner previously starred in Overcompensating on stage. On screen he has been in Curb Your Enthusiasm and First Time Female Director.

The actor and director came out in his final year of college and has been in a relationship with director and photographer Terrence O'Connor - who worked closely with Charli XCX on Brat - since 2016.

The story involves Benny’s coming out journey

Benny and Carmen enjoy and endure all that college has to offer.

With guidance from Benny’s older sister (Mary Beth Barone) and her campus-legend boyfriend (Adam DiMarco), Benny and Carmen juggle horrible hookups, flavoured vodka, and fake IDs.

“Deeply funny and personal, the show explores the lengths to which we all overcompensate while on the path to finding out who we really are,” Amazon says.

A top young cast is involved

As well as the two leads, Mary Beth Barone (Black Mirror), Adam DiMarco (The White Lotus) and Rish Shah (Ms. Marvel) are involved. Recurring guest stars include Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan, Kaia Gerber, Julia Shiplett, Tommy Do, Alexandra Beaton, Claire Qute, Elias Azimi and Maddie Phillips.

Overcompensating has some A-list celeb involvement

Comedy hero Jonah Hill is involved as executive producer. Also producing are Matt Dines and Ali Goodwin.

Charli XCX has followed her brat summer exploits by having a small role as herself. She is shown singing on stage and also has some dialogue.

The singer also serves as executive music producer and executive producer.

Megan Fox also appears in some capacity. In the trailer she is only seen in the coda, speaking from a poster which comes to life in Benny’s imagination.

Fox was most recently in the news after having her first child with ex Machine Gun Kelly with whom she will reportedly “co-parent”.
