Over eight in 10 Irish Mirror readers think the UK can't be trusted over Brexit

More than eight in 10 Irish Mirror readers believe that the UK can't be trusted over Brexit.

The results of our poll, which was conducted earlier this month, is released now after Boris Johnson was confirmed as the new Prime Minister of Britain yesterday.

We asked our readers: "Should Ireland give way to Britain to avoid a no-deal Brexit? The UK could be happy with a timed backstop in Northern Ireland if the Republic (and the EU) agrees to it - but should we let them have it to avoid disaster?

"Or do you think they can't be trusted and we should stick it out?"

With the optional answers of "Yes - Let's avoid no-deal" and "No - the UK can't be trusted," 81% of the 1,000 respondents voted for the latter.

One reader said: "We have to look after ourselves first, we didn't vote to leave, nor did Northern Ireland.

"Let the Westminster Government and the EU sort it out, but a border on any part of the island would bring back the bad old days."

Another added: "No, no, no, no. They cause nothing but problems and they think the world revolves around them.

"They need to be good European citizens and care about their neighbors.

"They want the divorce and they want it all their way. Divorces don’t happen like that. Unless you live in their fantasy world that is."
