Over a dozen NI Takeaways win big at all Ireland awards

The best takeaways throughout Ireland have officially been announced.

On Monday night, the YesChef Takeaway Awards 2022 took place in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone.

The award ceremony takes a look at the best takeaways throughout the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, determining the best outlets, as well as highly commended ones.

Of the 15 takeaway awards which were handed out to establishments across the UK, 6 of these were Northern Irish.

These include the awards for Chinese Takeaway of the Year, which went to Derry's Beijing Hous e; Kebab of the Year which went to Sphinx Kebab in Belfast; Healthy Takeaway of the Year, which went to Bia Rebel Ramen in Belfast; Pizza of the Year, which went to Limavady's Fire & Stone ; Sweet Treat of the Year, which went to Genoa Café, Warrenpoint ; and Innovation of the Year, which went to Belfast's Oui Poutine food truck.

As well as that, there were over a dozen 'Highly Commended' wins for Northern Irish takeaways.

Derry's Jasmine Chinese Takeaway, Armagh's Glaze & Roll, East Belfast's Greenway9 Lunch Bar, and Derry's Brendan's Takeaway all received 'Highly Commended' trophies.

Elsewhere, it was almost a clean sweep for Northern Ireland in the Pizza of the Year category. On top of Limavady's Fire & Stone winning the award outright, Wheelers, Derry, Castello Italia, Carrickfergus, Fairhill Pizza, Cookstown, Barr's Traditional Takeaway, Derry and Pizzaguyz, Belfast were all highly commended.

On top of that, Donaghadee's Saints N Sinners cafe received two Highly Commended awards, for Café Takeaway of the Year and for Sustainability.

Speaking about the awards ceremony on Monday, Saints N Sinners manager Jason Carnduff said:

"This is only our third year in business. We opened December 2019, and three months in the pandemic hit and we had to close for ten weeks. We operated a takeaway hatch during lockdown which worked really well for us and allowed us to get some wins at the NI Takeaway Awards, so to now get recognition on an all Ireland level is great. We've been trying our hardest to keep things going during the past two years.

"We catered for Hope Street when we were filming here, we're well known for our traybakes and were doing up to a hundred for them every day. We love getting to work in this local area."
