More than 3000 baby boxes sent to Ukrainian families in community scheme

The group formed in March in response to the war on Ukraine, as a way to support Ukrainians as the Russian war on Ukraine continues to devastate lives.

THE community group Scot Baby Box Appeal has sent more than 3000 baby boxes, alongside other essential supplies, to families in Ukraine.

The group was formed in March in response to the war in Ukraine as a way to support civilians as Russian aggression continues to devastate lives.

Baby boxes, which can also be used as a place for the baby to sleep in, have been delivered to expectant parents in Scotland since the scheme was introduced by the Scottish Government in 2017.

They contain essential goods and supplies for newborn babies. Now ahead of their fifth anniversary, the boxes are being repurposed by many as a way to send across vital aid and solidarity to Ukrainians afflicted by war.

“It’s not just aid, it’s much more than that”, group founder Jackie Crawford told The National.

“It’s the thought that someone’s taken the time and picked all of this beautiful stuff out.

“When you see a really nicely packed baby box and there’s a wee picture in it too – with a wee message from a Scottish mum - people know that Scotland are sending their whole heart too.”

Baby boxes are just one part of a wider range of support and solidarity that the group engages in.

In addition, Jackie says that the group has been sending trucks filled with essential aid and supplies to cities such as Vinnytsia, which was recently badly bombed by Russian forces.

It has also been engaged in helping Ukrainians settle in as some reach Scotland for refuge, helping them to find their feet and providing essential supplies if needed.

“Recently, a Ukrainian mum arrived in Aviemore and needed a stroller – we posted it on our Facebook page and soon after a member of our group was able to drop one off to her”, Jackie said.

Currently, the group is unable to accept further donations of baby boxes as due to the generosity of the Scottish community, it is at capacity.

However, the appeal is still seeking donations of backpacks as part of a “backpack appeal” for children and teenagers, nappies, baby food and formula, tinned foods, medicines and first aid supplies.
