Over 100 deaths from Covid notified in last week in Ireland as hospital numbers top 600

Over 100 new deaths from Covid-19 have been notified to the HPSC in the last seven days.

In total, 108 new deaths were recorded since last Wednesday, as health officials confirmed 9,881 new cases of the virus.

That breaks down into 5,268 PCR-confirmed cases, and 4,613 positive antigen tests.

A spokesperson said: "There has been a total of 6,399 deaths related to Covid-19 notified in Ireland. This includes 108 deaths newly notified in the past week (since last Wednesday)."

As of 8am today, 631 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of whom 62 are in ICU.

Earlier this week, one Irish hospital said it was facing a "very dangerous situation" thanks to overcrowding.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has said that Cork University Hospital as it recorded the highest number of patients on trolleys since its records began.

84 people were on trolleys at the hospital on Tuesday morning - the largest figure since the union began its Trolleywatch in 2006.

INMO Industrial Relations Officer Liam Conway said: “Today’s figures in CUH are of no surprise to those working in the hospital. The discharge rates simply are not keeping up with the admission rates and that is one of the reasons why we are seeing such high numbers on trolleys in CUH."
