'Outstanding' Manchester teacher named 'best in UK' for innovative approach to remote learning

A Greater Manchester teacher has been named Teacher of the Year at the Aspiration Awards by Educational charity NCFE.

Gary Rayworth is the curriculum leader for Technology and Computing at the Manchester school.

He was given the award following his innovative approach leading online lessons during lockdown - in his own department and across the school as a whole.

Reflecting on the last year, Mr Rayworth said: “I think everyone can agree that the last 18 months in the education sector has been beyond challenging, not just for the staff but more importantly for the learners who have had to adapt quickly to the changes as teachers get to grips with an ever-changing climate.

“My approach to everything I have done professionally in the last 18 months is to have a steadfast approach to ensuring that I always act in the best interest of my students and colleagues.

“I am incredibly proud to be nominated for this award.

"I couldn’t ask to work for a more caring or compassionate Headteacher, and I would like to acknowledge the support of my fellow colleagues as well, which is never out of reach working at Chorlton High School.”

Described as an ‘outstanding technology teacher’, Mr Rayworth introduced and now teaches the NCFE level 2 Technical Award in Graphic Design which gives key stage 4 students an alternative hands-on approach to learning.

Zoe Morris, a colleague of Mr Rayworth, describes his teaching as ‘exceptional’.

She said: “Whether in school or learning from home, the learners in his classes have received exceptional teaching. As a teacher, Gary is inspirational. He takes considerable pride in all of his work.”

Furthermore, while working from home during the third lockdown Mr Rayworth, working alongside senior leadership, was imperative in implementing the use of Microsoft Teams throughout the school to ensure a continuation of learning.

Catherine Sezen, Senior Policy Manager – FE at the Association of Colleges and category judge, said:

“Taking part in judging the NCFE aspiration awards reminds me of what education is all about, passing on knowledge and skills to others and making a difference to individuals and their communities.

“This year's winner of the teacher/tutor award has just that. Congratulations to Gary and all those teachers and tutors who were nominated.”
