It is not yet known when the eighth and final series of the fantasy drama will air with Starz confirming that the seventh series was it already in production with a trailer now available for people to watch.

Due to the pandemic, Outlander's sixth season had to be shortened but fans need not worry as Starz also announced an extended season seven, featuring sixteen episodes.

Taking to social media, Sam also confirmed the news saying: "Season 8, the last and final season!

"So delighted to have the opportunity to finish this epic story and we hope you will come along with us. What a journey. What a story. What fans!!! So excited… can you guess how it ends?

"(But don’t worry, an extended season 7 is coming this year, 16 eps to enjoy!)"

Whilst people were busy digesting the bittersweet news, it was also announced that there will be a prequel series called 'Outlander: Blood of My Blood' which will look into the lives and relationship of Jamie Fraser's parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie. According to the Daily Record, this will be available on LIONSGATE+ in the UK, Australia, Latin America, including Brazil, and across all STARZ platforms in the U.S. and Canada.

Reacting to Sam's post one said: "Guess we’re stuck with you for two more years then haha"

Another commented: "We will be with you, Cait and the amazing cast every step along the journey!! You can’t get rid of us that easily!!"

"It’s wonderful news but also a bit sad because it’s the end of a fantastic journey, and I was not ready. Thank you so much for bringing JAMMF to life. No one could do it better than you. Can’t wait to watch seasons 7 & 8 !! I wish you many more wonderful adventures like Outlander" wrote a lovely third.
