Outlander castle takes decision to close for the rest of 2020

A Scottish castle that features in the hit TV show Outlander has announced it has decided to close to visitors for the rest of 2020.

Midhope Castle, which doubles as Lallybroch - the early home of Sam Heughan's character Jamie Fraser, made the decision due to the recent travel restrictions placed by the government.

Used as an exterior film setting during both Season 1 and 2 of the hit show, the 16th-century townhouse that lies just 30 miles outside of Edinburgh.

Used to represent Outlander's Broch Tuarach (north-facing tower in Gaelic) and lovingly called Lallybroch (meaning lazy tower according the Outlander Wiki) by the Fraser family, the castle has become hugely popular with tourists.

Posting on their Facebook page, the Hopetoun Estate team who look after the site stated: "It is with regret that in light of updated Scottish Government advice regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19) we have taken the decision to close Midhope Castle for 2020.

"We thank you for your support and visits to the castle."

They added that anyone looking to learn when the castle will reopen in 2021 should keep an eye on their website.

Plans were recently unveiled that could see a new whisky distillery built at the site of the castle.

The ruins could soon be given a new lease of life after former Diageo director Ken Robertson, submitted a planning application to West Lothian Council for the building next to the castle, which they also plan to restore in the long term.

The development will be good news to fans of the hit Starz show, after many were dismayed to learn of its current dilapidated state.
