Lauren Bowker has spent much of her career turning science fiction into beauty products. Now, the founder of The Unseen Beauty is taking that ambition beyond Earth itself through a new line of lip balms under her newly launched EXIST skincare brand that has been developing their products -- in space.
The material innovator and creative scientist has unveiled Spacelip, a lip balm developed using biotechnology linked to research conducted aboard the International Space Station.
Rather than positioning the launch as another skincare essential, Bowker describes it as an experiment in what beauty can become when it intersects with space science.
"I didn't want to make just another lip balm. I wanted to make the most extreme one imaginable. In all ways. That journey started by looking to space," says Bowker.
The product's headline ingredient is a bioactive lysate derived from micro-organisms that were studied in the extreme conditions of space.
Exposed to radiation, microgravity and dramatic temperature fluctuations, these organisms developed survival mechanisms that researchers have long explored for their regenerative potential.
The resulting ingredient is designed to help support and protect the delicate skin barrier of the lips.
For Bowker, the project is a natural extension of a career built on challenging assumptions about what beauty products can do.
"I've spent the last 15 years inventing materials people said couldn't exist. I've always believed there are still worlds out there to explore -- and that what we discover from them can change life here on Earth," she says.
Spacelip launches in two versions: Origin 001 and Void 000.
Origin 001 is a sheer tinted balm that delivers hydration with a subtle wash of colour through a pH reactive tint with the allergen-free scent of fresh grass, cool camphor and geosmin, or in other words -- it is a scent of returning to Earth.
On the other hand, Void 000 offers a clear, fragrance-free alternative designed for those seeking a more minimalist finish.
Both formulas combine the space-derived bioactive ingredient with biotech-grown antioxidants and nourishing emollients intended to lock in moisture and strengthen the lips over time. The futuristic concept extends beyond the formula itself. The balm is housed in refillable aluminium packaging designed to be reused rather than discarded, reflecting a growing movement towards circular beauty and reduced packaging waste.
Bowker first gained international attention through innovations such as colour-changing hair dye, reactive pigments that shift in response to environmental conditions, and experimental beauty products that blur the line between cosmetics, technology and wearable science.
Her work has ventured into increasingly unconventional territory, from creating aerodynamic beauty looks shaped by wind and airflow testing to developing anti-surveillance designs capable of confusing facial recognition technology, including the security systems used in smartphones.
As biotechnology continues to reshape the beauty industry, ingredients developed in laboratories, deep-sea ecosystems and even outer space are moving from scientific experiments into everyday routines.
