Our new series explores how we can transform public transport in Scotland

How can we transform Scotland's transport system for the better? We're trying to find out (Image: Archive)

THE National is launching a new investigative series exploring how we can transform public transport in Scotland.

Many of us use public transport every day, relying on busses, trams, trains and ferries to get where we need to go.

There are positive examples of transport policy improving in Scotland. From ending peak fares on nationalised ScotRail, to bringing in £2 max fares on busses, to providing free bus travel for under-22s, these all positively impact day-to-day journeys for Scottish residents.

But too often, we're left paying over the odds for poor services from private firms who care mainly about their profits (thanks to Thatcher-era policies!). Some of us benefit from publicly owned services with tightly controlled fares, while others face route cuts and spiralling costs. People in rural areas are left isolated, while families in deprived urban areas are priced out.

Affordable, sustainable, efficient public transport improves lives, health, economies, the environment – it seems a no-brainer to look at how we can make it the best it can be.

So that's exactly what we're doing this week, from Monday to Friday.
