The 95th Academy Awards were held in Los Angeles on Sunday, putting to bed months of cinematic speculation. Everything Everywhere All at Once swept the awards with seven Oscars, including best picture and director.
There were some emotional moments throughout the ceremony, as Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan took home the awards for best actor and supporting actor respectively, marking the culmination of their remarkable comeback stories. ‘Scream queen’ Jamie Lee Curtis was teary as she referred to her movie star parents Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh – both of whom earned Oscar nominations – in her acceptance speech for best supporting actress.

Everything Everywhere All at Once
The surreal sci-fi was the biggest winner from the night with seven Oscars. It took home best picture, actress for Michelle Yeoh, supporting actress for Jamie Lee Curtis, actor for Ke Huy Quan, director for the Daniels, original screenplay for the Daniels, and film editing.

The Whale
Brendan Fraser took home the best actor award for his transformative role as a reclusive, morbidly obese professor who attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter. It also won the Oscar for best make-up and hairstyling.

All Quiet on the Western Front
This German war film based on the 1928 novel of the same name earned Netflix its eighth Best Picture nomination. It took home Best international feature, original score, cinematography, and production design.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of the classic tale of a little wooden boy earned the best animated feature award. It brought Pinocchio and Geppetto to life using impressive stop-motion.

Women Talking
This drama from writer-director Sarah Polley centres around a group of women in an isolated colony who are torn after revealing a dark secret about the community’s men. Based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Miriam Toews, Women Talking took home the Oscar for best adapted screenplay.

RRR
The Indian Telugu-language action epic RRR – short for Rise, Roar, Revolt – tells the fictional story of two revolutionaries fighting against British rule in India. It won the award for best original song for Naatu Naatu, marking the first Indian film song to win an Oscar having beat the likes of Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

Navalny
Daniel Roher’s documentary tells the story of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was poisoned with the lethal Novichok nerve agent in 2020. The film earned the best documentary feature film Oscar.

The Elephant Whisperers
This 40-minute documentary follows a couple who develop a bond with an orphaned baby elephant, and their efforts to ensure his survival in Southern India. It marks documentary filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves’ directorial debut and earned the Oscar for best documentary short film.

Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise made a dazzling return to the role he played more than 30 years ago in the iconic 1986 action flick. As fighter pilot Maverick, Cruise must train a group of young Top Gun graduates for a dangerous mission.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Marvel’s epic sequel takes superhero fans back to the secretive African nation of Wakanda. Released following the death of King T’Challa and actor Chadwick Boseman, the film marks the end of the franchise’s Phase Four of films and TV show.

Avatar: The Way of Water
James Cameron’s long-awaited epic sequel earned the Oscar for best visual effects for its creation of the extrasolar moon Pandora and its otherworldly inhabitants. The sci-fi blockbuster is still filling theatres, and has taken almost $2.3bn worldwide.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse
This heartwarming animation – with the voices of Idris Elba, Gabriel Byrne and Tom Hollander – tells a story of friendship between a boy and three animal friends. Directed by Peter Baynton and Charlie Mackesy and based on Mackesy’s 2019 novel of the same name, it won the award for best animated short film.

An Irish Goodbye
This Northern Ireland-set dark comedy centres on two estranged brothers who come together after their mother’s death. Written, produced, and directed by Tom Berkeley, An Irish Goodbye bagged the Oscar for best live action short film.
