'Ornamental hand grenade' sparks major police response in city

A major police response - including a bomb disposal team - rushed to the scene where a "suspicious device" was reported this afternoon.

Police were alerted at 11.35am following reports a device had been found inside a property on Woodbridge Avenue in Halewood.

A bomb disposal unit raced to the scene as nearby roads were closed off by police.

Residents were reportedly told to "stay indoors" as people were turned away from coming into the street.

Following the appearance of the explosives team, rumours circulated on Facebook that a World War Two device had been discovered.

However, the emergency was stood down around 2.30pm when it was discovered the suspicious device was in fact an "ornamental hand grenade".

Soon after, police left the scene and the roads around the estate were reopened.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We were contacted at 11.35am today, Thursday 14th January, following reports a suspicious device had been found inside a property on Woodbridge Avenue in Halewood.

"Officers closed nearby roads and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended the scene and confirmed the device was an ornamental hand grenade.

"The incident has now been stood down and the roads are in the process of being reopened.

"We would like to thank the community for their patience while this matter was dealt with."
