Ormeau Road 'knife robbery' being investigated by police

Police are investigating a robbery after a man armed with a knife got into the victim’s car and took a phone.

Detectives are appealing for information following the incident in the Ormeau Road area of South Belfast in the early hours of this morning (Saturday).

Detective Sergeant Stephen Gardiner said: “It was reported just before 1:10am that a man, aged 24, was parked in his car in the Raby Street area when a woman approached the vehicle and rapped his window.

“Two men then approached the car before one got into the front passenger seat, armed with a knife, while the second got into the rear seat. The male in the front took the victim’s phone.

“Despite attempts by the suspects to keep the victim in the car, he managed to get out and run towards the Ormeau Road where he was assisted by members of the public.

“The male who got into the front of the victim’s car is described as being aged in his forties with short dark hair and was wearing a t-shirt and shorts. The woman outside the vehicle is described as being aged in her mid to late thirties with dark hair in a ponytail.

“Thankfully, the victim was physically uninjured, however, this was a very distressing incident.

“We are appealing to anyone with information, who was in the area at the time or who may have dashcam or other footage to contact police on 101 quoting reference 106 of 20/11/21.”

The police added that witnesses can also submit a report online using their non-emergency system on www.psni.police.uk/makeareport or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.

Gary McKeown, an SDLP councillor in the area, said the incident "must have been a very distressing".

He added: "For someone to be the victim of a crime like this when they were just sitting in their vehicle is shocking and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

"This is a vibrant and popular part of the city for both residents and visitors, but like anywhere it's not without its issues, and I'm in regular contact with police regarding this. I would urge anyone with any information to contact them."
