Organisers of English Half Marathon apologise for cancelling the event

The organisers of the English Half Marathon, which was cancelled just six days before the race, have apologised and said it has  been "an extremely difficult week for everyone involved."

The race, which attracts runners from across Greater Manchester and the north west, was due to take place on Sunday in Warrington, Cheshire.

But it was unexpectedly cancelled on Monday - leading to complaints from runners on social media. The postponement was announced due to "safety issues".

In a Facebook post earlier this week, they wrote they were "not able to guarantee all the necessary components to deliver a safe and fun race weekend experience".

Runner Steph Hampson said she was "devastated. All the weeks of training feel like a waste. I'm sure it wasn't a decision taken lightly, but you can't help but feeling fuming and gutted."

In a statement released on Thursday, the organisers said: "We can only apologise for the disappointment, frustration and anger that the postponement of this weekend's event has rightly caused.

"We are desperately trying to get the right outcome for everybody, and we are engaging in positive conversations with all relevant parties about whether a new event date is deliverable."

This is "taking longer than we would like," they added and unfortunately they are not in a position to confirm that this week.

It added: "Please accept our sincere apologies and please bear with us whilst we work through this and come to the right decision for everyone involved."
