Oprah Winfrey’s school for girls to close after two decades

• Oprah Winfrey will close The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa at the end of next year, two decades after its establishment.
• The school was launched in 2007 following discussions with Nelson Mandela, who emphasised the importance of educating young women.
• Winfrey's commitment to educating South African girls will continue through an expanded national scholarship programme, supporting academically talented students at leading schools across the country.
• More than 500 girls have graduated from the academy, with many attending top universities in South Africa, the United States, and Europe.
• The 52-acre campus will be taken over by the Gauteng provincial government, and all currently enrolled students are assured of completing their education with uninterrupted financial support.
