OpenAI has said it is a step closer to creating a “super app” after unveiling its most powerful artificial intelligence model to date
The ChatGPT creator described its latest GPT-5.5 model, which was launched on Thursday, as “a new class of intelligence”, capable of autonomously carrying out tasks without human oversight.
The new model is particularly strong at conducting online research, analysing data, creating documents, operating software and writing code, according to its developers.
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman said GPT-5.5 – which is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users – is also more intuitive than previous versions, allowing it to understand “messy, multi-part tasks” independently.
“What’s really special about this model is how much more it can do with less guidance,” he said.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman added: “In my experience, it ‘gets what to do’.”
Early users have praised the new model for being able to complete tasks without supervision, with one even claiming that it felt like human-level artificial intelligence, or artificial general intelligence (AGI).
“While testing GPT-5.5, I had my first taste of AGI,” said Pietro Schirano, chief executive of AI design took MagicPath.
OpenAI said the model marks a step towards its upcoming “super app”, which is being designed to allow users to carry out actions across other apps and tools using AI agents.
“We want to be a platform for every company, scientist, entrepreneur, and person,” Altman wrote in a post to X following the unveiling of GPT-5.5. “My whole career has largely been about the magic of startups, and I think we are about to see that magic at hyperscale.”
Fellow OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk, who has since cut ties with the company to pursue his own AI ambitions through xAI, is also working on a so-called super app, which he plans to be similar to China’s WeChat or India’s PayTM.
Referring to it as an “everything app”, Musk hopes to transform X into a platform that can handle every aspect of a user’s digital life, from social networks and messaging apps, to online shopping and banking.
