NEW DELHI: Eighth seed Ons Jabeur advanced to the fourth round of the French Open with a challenging 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Canadian Leylah Fernandez on Friday.
The Tunisian, who aims to become the first Arab and African woman to win a Grand Slam title, overcame a tough opponent to keep her hopes alive in Paris.
Jabeur, 29, has previously come close to Grand Slam success, reaching the finals at Wimbledon twice and the US Open in 2022, but has yet to secure a title. Facing Fernandez, a former US Open finalist herself, was a significant test in her campaign.
The first set saw both players exchange breaks midway through, but Jabeur ultimately took control with strong serving. Fernandez, the 31st seed, struggled to counter Jabeur’s varied play, particularly her trademark drop shots.
The second set proved more challenging for Jabeur as Fernandez quickly established a 3-1 lead. However, Jabeur's resilience and tactical adjustments allowed her to regain momentum and eventually force a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Jabeur edged out Fernandez to secure her place in the fourth round.
Jabeur’s ability to navigate this tricky encounter demonstrates her determination and skill as she continues her quest for a maiden Grand Slam title.
"Everybody knows Leylah, she plays very well. She's a very aggressive player," said Jabeur. "I knew that I had to finish the match before the third set and I won some points at the right moments.
"It was a bit tough on serve but I'm very happy to win."
Jabeur, who reached the quarter-finals at the French Open last year, showed her resilience by leveling the second set and saving a set point in a lengthy five-deuce game. She ultimately secured her victory with a composed performance in the tiebreak, winning 6-4, 7-6(5).
Next up for Jabeur is a match against unseeded Danish player Clara Tauson, who caused an upset by defeating former runner-up Sofia Kenin 6-2, 7-5. This sets the stage for an intriguing fourth-round encounter as Jabeur continues her pursuit of a Grand Slam title.
