Online businesses crack down on price gouging on sanitary masks

Internet retailers such as Yahoo Japan Corp. and Rakuten Inc. have prohibited third-party vendors from using their online auction sites to resell sanitary masks at high prices, ahead of the government's plan to legally prohibit such profiteering.

The government's revision of an ordinance related to the Emergency Measures for Stabilizing Living Conditions Law will take effect on Sunday.

Such sales have been banned on Yahoo's auction site since Wednesday. The company will also restrict the sale of homemade masks as well as the sale of masks in combination with higher-ticket items. Masks listed at reasonable prices are allowed, but vendors will be prohibited from listing the items in online auctions.

Rakuten's website Rakuma started its ban on the resale of masks on Thursday, while Mercari Inc. was set to enact its prohibition on Friday.
