Capcom has moved up the release date of its much-awaited Japanese action-adventure game, "Onimusha: Way of the Sword," slightly earlier than its original fall release date.
With this, players will get a chance to jump right into the action earlier than expected, giving them access to the long-dormant action franchise from Capcom, which is looking to continue their successes in the industry this year.
Capcom Moves Up 'Onimusha: Way of the Sword' Release Date
"We are delighted to bring Onimusha: Way of the Sword to you earlier on September 4, 2026," Capcom announced in its official statement.
The company offered no specific reason for the change, but the timing aligns with a well-observed industry pattern.
Capcom has also released a free playable demo across PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and the Epic Games Store ahead of the new launch date. Players who finish the demo and keep their save data will unlock the Kubi Akari charm when the full game goes live.
Preorders for the Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe editions are now open, and any purchase made before September 24 qualifies for Early Adopter Bonuses.
Nintendo Switch 2 players should note that their existing pre-orders will be canceled due to the date change and will need to be placed again on the updated listing.

The late September and October window has become increasingly crowded, with many publishers repositioning their titles to avoid the holiday release crush, particularly as anticipation for "Grand Theft Auto VI" continues to shape release strategies across the industry.
According to Capcom's official website for the game, it will now launch on September 4, 2026, three weeks ahead of its previously announced September 25 date. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store.

"Onimusha: Way of the Sword" marks the first mainline entry in the franchise in 20 years. The original "Onimusha: Warlords" debuted in 2001 and was a major PlayStation 2 hit, spawning three direct sequels and a handful of spin-offs.
After "Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams" in 2006, the series went quiet, leaving an entire generation of players without a new entry. The franchise has since reached more than 8.7 million units sold worldwide across its catalog.
The new game takes place in a dark fantasy version of Edo-era Kyoto, overrun by demonic creatures called Genma after the city is engulfed by clouds of Malice.
Players take on the role of a samurai wielding the mystical Oni Gauntlet and follow his path through bloody, gore-soaked swordplay across the city's corrupted streets.
Should You Get 'Onimusha: Way of the Sword'?
Early previews of the game have been encouraging, and IGN's hands-on preview was positive overall, describing the combat as bringing real juice to the experience while noting that it is firmly an action-adventure game and not a Soulslike, despite surface comparisons.
The game brings back signature Onimusha mechanics including Issen, the series' iconic timed counterattack system, and Soul Absorption, while building on those foundations with a combat system designed for modern audiences.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version runs at 1080p in docked mode and 900p in handheld mode, both at 30 frames per second with an optional variable mode reaching up to 40.
Switch 2 players also get exclusive Joy-Con 2 motion controls for bow aiming and sword swings.
