'One trick pony' - Everton sent Duncan Ferguson new manager message by former Premier League chief

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has told Everton not to appoint Duncan Ferguson as their next manager and labelled the club icon a 'one-trick pony'.

Ferguson was undefeated in normal time during his previous spell as interim manager following the sacking of Marco Silva in 2019 and guided Everton to a rousing victory over Chelsea at Goodison Park.

He was kept on as joint-assistant by Carlo Ancelotti alongside his son Davide and the Scot has been linked with the vacant post after the Italian returned to Real Madrid last week.

Jordan admitted Ferguson 'embodies a certain spirit that you want' but advised Everton the 49-year-old 'does not have the toolkit and skillset' to 'compete' in the top seven of the Premier League.

Jordan has been out of football since 2010 when Crystal Palace went into administration and his ownership at Selhurst Park came to an end.

He told talkSPORT: "Duncan Ferguson embodies a certain spirit that you want in your club but you don’t want that spirit running the club on a day-to-day basis because it will come unwound. It is a one tricky pony.

"It has a certain way of operating and it should absolutely be utilised.

"I do not think it would do Duncan Ferguson any favour whatsoever to be given that role.

"You need to save him from himself.

"You would put a club hero into a position, it is like asking a one-legged man to run a 100m in ten seconds and then castigating him for not being able to do it.

"He does not have the toolkit and the skillset to be a manager capable of competing with the six or seven other managers.”
