One of Liverpool's busiest roads still closed after nine hours

Liverpool's Queens Drive flyover is still closed in both directions after nine hours, causing traffic chaos in the city.

The flyover was closed at around 8am today with traffic monitoring system INRIX reporting "accident investigation work" is taking place on the M62 near The Rocket.

The Liverpool ECHO contacted Merseyside Police to ask for details about the road closure and was referred to Liverpool Council.

Liverpool Council said the incident was a National Highways matter, however National Highways said it has no involvement in the incident.

The ECHO is still waiting for clarification on why the Queens Drive flyover remains closed after nine hours.

Traffic was at a standstill for most of the day following the closure with 'chaos' being reported across the region including in Stoneycroft, Old Swan and Childwall.

INRIX is reporting major congestion from the flyover back to Broadgreen Hospital and Childwall Five Ways roundabout.

People stuck in traffic near to the flyover on Queens Drive this morning described it as being "like a car park."

One person tweeted: "Chaos around the flyover Queens Drive it’s shut knock on effect around the area."

Another said: "Flyover by the Rocket pub on Queens Drive is closed, just sat in traffic for 20 mins it’s gridlocked."

A third said: "Avoid Queens Drive. It’s a car park."

Pictures of the scene show a road closure sign and long queues of traffic in the area as cars were being diverted away from the flyover at the Rocket.

Images taken of the flyover on Queens Drive and the surrounding roads also show ice at the roadside.

Traffic monitoring system INRIX said: "A5080 Queens Drive Flyover in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to accident investigation work at M62 (The Rocket). Congestion to Broadgreen Hospital and Childwall Five Ways roundabout. There are also queues on Edge Lane.

"Closed since 8am causing delays around the surrounding area."
