One in five Brits has secretly logged into their ex's social media accounts

Whether it’s Instagram or Snapchat, these days you’d be hard pushed to find many people without some form of social media account.

But if you have a social media account, a new survey may make you consider changing your password.

The survey, by Google, has revealed that almost a fifth of Brits have secretly logged into their ex’s social media accounts.

To celebrate Safer Internet Day, Google surveyed 1,000 Brits about their online habits, and found that 17% of people have sneakily logged into an ex’s account.

The research also revealed that over a third of Brits have shared their passwords with their partner, while 59% admitted to using the same password across multiple websites, further compromising their security.

Delver deeper into the results, Google found that 36% of people would feel happy to share their password with their partner after just a year of dating.

Elijah Lawal, online safety communications manager at Google UK said: “It is important to keep passwords private and secure as sharing passwords can lead to the compromising of people’s most sensitive information.

“If couples want to share passwords, we recommend using 2 step verification, which adds additional protections to their accounts and information.”

Passwords aren't the only things that many couples share though - a recent study found that the majority of couples admit to sharing a towel with their partner.

The study, by Drench, revealed that 56% of couples have shared a used towel with their partner.

While this might seem harmless, previous research has found that 90% of bathroom towels are contaminated with faecal bacteria, while 14% carry  E.Coli .

Towels can also harbour various other infectious bacteria, including ringworm and staph infections, according to Drench.
